India’s Agriculture Minister said today that total food grain production in the country in 2012-13 is likely to reach the targeted 254.23 million tons despite drought and deficient rainfall in some parts of the country last year. In 2011-12, India produced an estimated 259 million tons, including about 105 million tons of rice. However, it was expected that food grain production may not cross the 250 million tons mark in 2012-13 due to droughts last year.
Better-than-expected production of pulses and several other crops have been reported from several parts of the country, the Agriculture Minister said today.
